Last week, I hopped on the phone with a non-traditional applicant (who works in fashion!) to chat about all things MBA. We ended up talking about how people don’t apply to business school because everything’s oh-so-perfect, but because they realize that they’re itching for more — a higher salary, a career change, something new.
And it got me thinking…If you’re reading this blog, you’ve probably decided to pursue your MBA. You’ve decided you want more. And that is f*cking awesome.
…And f*cking scary, right?
When I decided to apply to business school, I felt like I was abandoning a huge part of my identity by leaving my producing career. It was hard for me to accept that my goals had changed and that what I wanted now was so different from what I had worked towards for such a long time.
I didn’t know if I’d get in to school, and as someone who naturally tends away from risk and towards self-doubt, I had a hard time believing that things would work out. Just talking about applying scared the crap out of me — besides family, mentors, and close friends, I didn’t tell people I was thinking about getting an MBA until I’d already put down my deposit at Kellogg.
Luckily, while I was going through my ups and downs, my friends and family reminded me to celebrate my choices, instead of doubting them. Here’s a little perspective from my favorite humans:
You’ve realized that you want more, and that is something to celebrate. You’re taking a leap of faith — of faith in yourself, really. There’s this standard wisdom that 80% of people who apply to business school are qualified to get in. Work your ass off and minimize the weaknesses in your application, but at the same time, have faith that you are good enough, because you are.
And celebrate the fact that you’re disrupting your status quo! It takes balls to do that, even when (especially when?) it’s a status quo that you’ve spent years building. Change is hard for a reason — the struggle makes it so much sweeter when you get to the other side. Not everyone is willing to do what it takes to get what they want. But you? You’re brave, you’re a badass, and you got this.
If you’re like me, you’re going to have moments of self-doubt. When those moments hit, just take a breath and remember: you f*cking rule.
